Shek Yam East Estate

Hong Kong is continuing to grow thus facing increasing urban density and upward mobility. As the resources diminish and population increase, this pressurized city is in need of a new urban scheme to bring new methods of space-making.

Hong Kong has little room to stretch outward. The city is in need of new "land". Challenging the traditional notion of construction, the project proposes multi-generational residential towers on top of the existing public housing blocks as a way of remedying housing demand and land supply. The existing blocks becomes a new ground zero.

Altered (E)states

The new towers will foster a new sense of identity and community across the estate. The addition will bring a change of perception where public housing blocks will no longer be unattractive dwelling types built with small standardized units, but desirable shelters for families to live in.

Our site, shek yam east estate, with three new harmony blocks, is located between a large country park and a more populated built environment. The structure atop will form multiple gateways into the estate.

The new towers gently sit on top of existing buildings bringing new terrain in the sky

From the existing cruciform footprint, the tower systematically grows vertically and horizontally providing greater square footage for the residents. This expansion also allows for an inside pocket within the building where people can gather around for various communal activities while having a connection to the outside.

There are 3 types of wind force resisting structural systems. The first is located in the inner core of the building with shafts and stairs, second is the exterior attached reinforcement, and the third is the hallway structural columns inside walls. Aside from the primary structural walls, these secondary structures hold the tower together and resist from lateral forces.
